For the remainder of this week I will be posting a series called “What I See.”  I see a lot of good and I hope that you will start looking for the good in your local school.  

What I See- Our Teachers

I see teachers arriving an hour prior to the start of the school day (unpaid), because students need additional help with class material.

I see teachers staying hours after the end of the normal school day (unpaid) to tutor students that could not come to the morning tutoring sessions.

I see teachers collecting food goods for needy students that might otherwise have nothing to eat for dinner or on the weekends.

I see teachers supporting local charities by participating in the local “Giving Tree” to help students have a good Christmas.

I see teachers spending their own money to purchase supplies that parents can’t or won’t supply.

I see teachers giving up their lunch periods to help students who need extra support but they can not come before school or stay after school.

I see teachers working late at night to grade papers and create new relevant lesson plans that will engage students.

I see teachers attending sporting events and other extracurricular activities not even related to the school to show students that they not only care about academics but they care about the other stuff that students do.

I see teachers working hours to write the perfect recommendations to go along with college applications.

I see teachers do more with less each and every day.

I see teachers visiting the hospital rooms of students and their parents and helping families during times of distress and uncertainty.

I see teachers implementing exciting lessons even though the curriculum is constantly changing.

I see teachers constantly enrolled in continuing education course just to be able to maintain their certification.

I see teachers engaging with students every day. Not only in the classrooms, but in the hallways and cafeteria.

I see teachers crying over the success and failures of their students.

I see teachers showing more compassion than some kids have ever experienced in their lives.

I really could go on and on about the good things I see in our building. These things are never reported in the media, because these things do not cause outrage. Not all teachers are bad, and it is long past time that people quit putting all teachers in the same box. Many teachers are still teachers because they really do care about the students that they teach and the community in which they live.
